Stop the Irritation: Your Essential Guide to Lasting Dry Eye Relief

Stop the Irritation: Your Essential Guide to Lasting Dry Eye Relief

Do your eyes constantly burn, itch, or feel as if they have sand in them? If you're struggling with persistent eye irritation, you're not alone.

At Cooper Optometry in Santa Monica, California, our dedicated optometrists, Donna Cooper, OD, and Sarah Chung, OD, specialize in diagnosing and treating this uncomfortable condition.

Dry eye affects approximately 8.1% of adults in the United States, making it one of the most common reasons patients visit our office.

We understand how frustrating chronic eye discomfort can be, especially when it interferes with your daily life. We offer personalized dry eye therapy that targets the root causes of your symptoms rather than masking them.

What causes dry eye disease?

Dry eye disease is a complex, inflammatory condition that occurs when your eyes don’t produce enough tears or when your tears evaporate too quickly.

Many people believe dry eyes result from a simple lack of moisture, but the primary underlying driver is meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD). Asymptomatic MGD — where the oil-producing glands in your eyelids are damaged but don’t yet cause pain — has a global adult prevalence of nearly 73%.

Modern lifestyle factors also play a major role in dry eye symptoms. Long hours looking at screens can lead to computer vision syndrome, which drastically reduces how often you blink.

When you don't blink enough, your tear film breaks down, leaving your eyes exposed, dry, and highly irritated.

Why do my eyes water if they’re dry?

Watery eyes are a classic sign of dry eye disease because rapid tear evaporation triggers an emergency reflex response in your brain.

When your meibomian glands fail to produce enough protective oil, the water in your tears evaporates almost instantly. That leaves your sensitive corneal surface completely unprotected and exposed to friction.

In response, your brain tells your tear glands to flood the eye with reflex tears. However, these emergency tears are almost entirely water and lack the oils needed to stay on the eye.

As a result, they wash over your eye and run down your cheeks, leaving your eyes just as dry and irritated as before.

Find lasting dry eye relief

For lasting dry eye relief, skip the temporary, over-the-counter drops and choose targeted clinical treatments that address the root cause of your inflammation. Standard lubricating drops offer quick, short-term comfort, but they can’t heal the underlying tissue.

At Cooper Optometry, we offer advanced therapies to break the cycle of inflammation. For example, we may recommend prescription treatments such as topical cyclosporine A.

A study demonstrated that cyclosporine A significantly reduces corneal damage and improves overall dry eye symptoms by calming localized inflammation.

If you're tired of dealing with constant burning and redness, we're here to help. Schedule an appointment with our team today to start your journey toward clear, comfortable vision.
